GFTA-3 age calculator

Compute the exact chronological age for the Goldman-Fristoe Test of Articulation, Third Edition. Enter the date of birth and the test date to get years; months; days for the GFTA-3 record form — one student or a whole articulation caseload.

GFTA-3 chronological age

The GFTA-3 is normed by the child's exact age at testing. Confirm any age-band or rounding rule in your GFTA-3 manual.

Corrected age subtracts the weeks born early from the term due date. Many clinicians stop correcting at 24 months (AAP) — some protocols use 36. Follow your own protocol; this is a labelled default, not a rule.

About the GFTA-3

Chronological age for the GFTA-3

The GFTA-3 (Goldman-Fristoe Test of Articulation, Third Edition) is a widely used, norm-referenced measure of speech-sound articulation for people aged2 years 0 months to 21 years 11 months. It compares a student's sound production against peers of the same chronological age, so the age you enter on the record form is what decides which normative table is used to derive standard scores.

Articulation norms are age-referenced

Children acquire speech sounds on a developmental timeline, so what counts as a typical error shifts with age. The GFTA-3 captures this by grouping its norms into age bands. A student near a band boundary can land on a different standard score depending on which side of the line the age falls, which is why an exact age is worth the extra care.

Compute from the test date

Enter the date of birth and the date the GFTA-3 was administered. The calculator returns the exact age in years; months; days — for example a child born 12 March 2018 and tested on 28 June 2024 is 6;3;16. Counting is leap-aware and correct at month boundaries, so the age matches a careful hand calculation; the How we calculate this panel shows the working for your own dates.

Which rounding does the GFTA-3 use?

Let your GFTA-3 Examiner's Manual settle it. Out of the box this calculator hands you the exact years; months; days and stops there — it will not invent a rounding step the manual is silent on. If the manual you are holding asks for years and months only, or for the month to be rounded at 15 days, switch the rounding toggle so the figure you copy across lines up with it.

GFTA-3 chronological age — FAQ

How do I calculate chronological age for the GFTA-3?

Enter the child's date of birth and the GFTA-3 administration date. The calculator returns the exact age in years; months; days — the age the GFTA-3 uses to select the correct age-based norms for speech-sound production. Record it on the record form and use the age band your manual specifies.

What ages does the GFTA-3 cover?

The Goldman-Fristoe Test of Articulation, Third Edition (GFTA-3) is normed for ages 2 years 0 months through 21 years 11 months. Because articulation skills change rapidly in the preschool years, its norms are grouped into age bands and a precise chronological age is needed to place a student correctly.

Does the GFTA-3 round the chronological age?

Treat the GFTA-3 Examiner's Manual as the final word. This calculator reports the child's exact age at testing — full years; months; days — and will not silently apply a convention the manual does not spell out. Should your copy of the manual tell you to report years and months only, or to round the month at 15 days, flip the rounding toggle to match it, then transcribe that figure to the record form.

Why does exact age matter for articulation norms?

Whether a sound error is developmentally expected or clinically significant depends on the child's age. A misarticulation that is typical at 3;0 may be a concern at 6;0, so the standard score the GFTA-3 produces hinges on placing the child in the right age band. Computing the exact age from the test date protects the validity of that judgment.

Can I calculate GFTA-3 ages for my whole caseload?

Yes. If you are working through an articulation-screening roster, switch to Caseload mode, enter a label and date of birth for each child, set the shared test date, and copy the finished table into your notes. The rows live in your browser only — nothing about your roster is uploaded.
