WISC-V age calculator

Compute the exact chronological age for the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Fifth Edition. Enter the date of birth and the test date to get years; months; days for the WISC-V record form — one student or a whole caseload.

WISC-V chronological age

The WISC-V is normed by the child's exact age at testing. Confirm any age-band or rounding rule in your WISC-V Administration & Scoring Manual.

Corrected age subtracts the weeks born early from the term due date. Many clinicians stop correcting at 24 months (AAP) — some protocols use 36. Follow your own protocol; this is a labelled default, not a rule.

About the WISC-V

Chronological age for the WISC-V

The WISC-V (Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Fifth Edition) is a cognitive and intellectual-ability measure used mainly by school and clinical psychologists. Normed for ages 6:0 through 16:11, it converts a child's raw subtest performance into scaled and composite standard scores by comparing it against peers of the same chronological age — so the age you enter on the record form decides which normative table is applied.

Why exact age drives the WISC-V norms

Because WISC-V norms are organized into age bands, the chronological age is not a formality — it selects the reference group. Full Scale IQ and the primary index scores feed directly into gifted identification, specific learning disability determinations and other eligibility calls, and every one of those scores depends on the age band the child lands in. An age computed loosely can move a score enough to change the decision.

Compute from the test date

Enter the date of birth and the date the WISC-V was administered. The calculator returns the exact age in years; months; days — a child born 10 April 2013 who sits the test on 18 September 2024, for instance, is 11;5;8. Counting is leap-aware and correct at month boundaries, so the age matches a careful hand calculation; the “How we calculate this” panel shows the working for your own dates.

Which rounding does the WISC-V use?

Defer to your WISC-V Administration & Scoring Manual here — it is the one authority. Since scores are read from age-based norm tables, this calculator hands you the unrounded years; months; days and stops, rather than inventing a rounding rule the manual never sets out. Where the manual specifies how to enter the age band, switch the rounding toggle to the matching option — exact, years-and-months, or round-at-15 — instead of borrowing a convention from another test.

WISC-V chronological age — FAQ

How do I calculate chronological age for the WISC-V?

Enter the child's date of birth and the WISC-V administration date. The calculator returns the exact age in years; months; days — the age the WISC-V uses to pick the correct age-based normative table. Record it on the record form and read the age band your Administration & Scoring Manual specifies.

Does the WISC-V round the chronological age?

Your WISC-V Administration & Scoring Manual settles this, not us. The scale reads a child's subtest performance against its age-based norm tables, so this calculator reports the plain years; months; days and stops there — it never presumes a rounding step the manual leaves unstated. Should the manual tell you to look the age band up a particular way, the rounding toggle lets you reproduce it.

What ages does the WISC-V cover?

The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Fifth Edition (WISC-V) is normed for children aged 6:0 through 16:11 — six years, zero months up to sixteen years, eleven months. A child outside that band needs a different Wechsler instrument, so the exact age also confirms the WISC-V is the right test.

Why does a single day matter near an age boundary?

The WISC-V groups its norms into narrow age bands. A child assessed one day either side of a band boundary can be compared against a different reference group, shifting the standard and scaled scores that drive eligibility decisions. Computing the exact age from the actual test date protects the validity of that comparison.

Can I calculate WISC-V ages for a whole caseload?

Working through a stack of cognitive evaluations or triennial re-evals is exactly what Caseload mode is for. As a school psychologist, open it, give each child a label, drop in their date of birth, set the WISC-V administration date once, and copy the finished table straight onto your record forms. The rows live in your browser only — nothing about any student is uploaded.
